Dear Friends,

Welcome to another edition of Gateways.  Even though we are into an era of compliance issues, paperwork and regulations, we feel it necessary to tell everyone about the wonderful happenings in the world of student exchange.  We like to do that through our editions of Gateways.  This exciting world of exchange depends upon our students, host families, school officials and exchange representatives.

We should never forget the great work that each of the above does.  There are the brave students who come and work on Project Help and who work hard at becoming members of a new family.  The schools and their personnel are so important since in most cases they go far beyond the scope of their duties to help our students in their new surroundings.  The host families rearrange their entire lives for a year just to show their love and affection for a new family member.  Last but certainly not least are our representatives and manager,  These individuals work tirelessly during the entire year,  making sure that our students have the best host families as possible and who arrange so many events during the year so that our students can experience the most during their stay.  I must always make sure to mention our office personnel also who spend many long days, nights and weekends at their desks and on their phones to ensure that this program runs as smoothly as it does.

Look through these friendly and smiling faces in Gateways and read the stories carefully.  The world of exchange does change lives and in almost all cases, the change is positive.  I am convinced that our greatest shortcoming in this work is that we never have enough time to publicize all of the great work that everyone does to make our mission of “educating tomorrow’s leaders” become a reality.

Events
No matter how many foreign exchange students I work with, seeing their first experience with snow is amazing!  The wonder and sheer pleasure students demonstrate is a delight...

Gateways on Location
Once again, our New York Trip was fabulous . . . in spite of the extreme cold.  These young people rode in the open air on the top of a double-decker bus in the freezing temperatures to get a great view of New York City!

Meeting the Needs of Others
Helping others is what H.E.L.P. is all about.  Several exchange students and youth group members in Maine pooled their time, money and energy to put together care packages for members of the military and college students.
